An EPRI software demonstration suite was open during most of more » the symposium for individual and small group tutorials. A selection committee comprising utility forecasting professionals reviewed over 100 abstracts before selecting the 48 invited papers. EPRI, Baltimore Gas Electric, and the Utility Forecasters Forum cosponsored a two-and-one-half-day symposium in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 23-25, 1991. This symposium brought together the producers'' and consumers'' of forecasts to share their different perspectives and experiences. Althoug the methods, data, and decisions employed in constructing a forecast are important, a forecast's ultimate value lies in its ability to support the goals of the information user. A separate abstract was prepared for the introductory paper and for each of the 17 = ,įorecasts underpin many facets of utility operations.

To introduce this volume, the symposium's coordinator discusses the background of electric utility forecasting. Topics for the six sessions were: Forecasting Residential Kilowatthour Consumption, Forecasting Peak Demand and Load Shape, Forecasting Commercial Kilowatthour Consumption, Forecasting Problems of Small Utilities, Forecasting Industrial Kilowatthour Consumption, and Integrated Approaches to Forecasting. Of the 20 presentations made in six sessions, 17 papers were submitted for publication in the proceedings. The symposium sought to include a wide range of forecasting philosophies. Thus, all the papers presented discussed forecasting approaches currently in use by electric utilities.

Each person invited to give a paper was directly employed by an electric utility or was a consultant designated by a utility to represent that utility's forecasting methodology. The emphasis of this symposium was on practice and application. This symposium was organized to provide electric-utility forecasters an opportunity to learn from colleagues the current state of the forecaster's art.
